Florence Nightingale e il Risorgimento: la trama del suo pensiero dall'epistolario, 1837-1872

Abstract

RIASSUNTO

Florence Nightingale fu una grande ammiratrice del nostro paese. Lei amava profondamente la cultura italiana; lo dimostrano i ripetuti viaggi presso il bel paese e la conoscenza della lingua e della cultura antica romana. L'analisi delle lettere che riguardano i soggiorni in Italia di Nightingale rendono conto di opinioni, descrizioni e conferme di un suo coinvolgimento, in termini di valori condivisi e supporto alla causa, nel Risorgimento. L'epistolario offre una panoramica di sentimenti e di azioni che Lei compie rivelando il senso di giustizia e di libertí  che le sono propri, conducendola a una reale partecipazione intellettuale ed anche economica alla causa degli insorti italiani. Si trae dai suoi scritti, dal 1832 al 1872, un profilo meno noto di Nightingale, fondatrice dell'assistenza infermieristica moderna, ma anche fervida sostenitrice dei diritti umani universali e della libertí  dei popoli. Ella mostra, anche in questa circostanza, la forza del carattere che tanto l'ha contraddistinta nella sua opera, esponendosi nel sostegno della causa risorgimentale a favore degli insorti. ABSTRACT

Florence Nightingale was a great admirer of our country. She deeply loved the Italian culture, as demonstrated by her repeated trips in our country and her knowledge of the language and the ancient Roman's culture. The analysis of her letters concerning her journeys in Italy are very interesting because you can find reviews, descriptions and confirmation of her involvement in our Risorgimento, in terms of shared values and support the cause. The correspondence gives an overview of feeling and actions that it shows a sense of justice and freedom, feelings that led to a real participation, although the economic and intellectual, to the cause of the Italians insurgents. The evolution of these values in her life paint a less known side of the thoughts of Florence Nightingale, founder of the nursing profession, but also advocate for universal human rights. Even in this case, she shows the strength of character that has marked much of her work, exposing herself in support of the Risorgimento.
